What Overcrank collects, why, who helps us run it, and the choices you have.
Last updated October 6, 2026
This policy explains how Overcrank ("we") handles information when you use the Overcrank Mac app, the account portal and this website. The short version: your files stay on your Mac, we collect what we need to run your account, and we don’t sell your data or use advertising trackers.
Your files stay on your Mac
Drivetrain, Cruise Control and Readout work entirely on your Mac. Your footage, audio and other files are never uploaded to Overcrank. Transfer history and Cranky’s memory are stored on your Mac too; you can clear them in the app under Profile → App data.
The AI tools (Crankshaft and Cranky) need to know about your files to organize them, so when you use them the app sends:
- the instruction you type, and your answers to any follow-up questions;
- file and folder names, their paths inside the folder you chose, and basic details such as size, dates, type and media specs (codec, resolution, frame rate).
The app does not send the contents of your files (no video, audio or images). These requests go through our servers to an AI provider to get an answer, and we keep a record of each request (time, feature, size and credits used) but not what was in it.
What we collect
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Account details: name, email, password (stored scrambled, never readable), team and role | To sign you in and run your team |
| Billing: your plan, invoices and a payment reference. Card details go straight to our payment processor; we never see or store your full card number | To charge you and show your invoices |
| Devices: each signed-in Mac’s name, macOS and app version, IP address and when it was last used | To enforce device limits and let you sign a Mac out remotely |
| Notification contacts: the email and phone number you verify for alerts | To send the alerts you turn on |
| AI usage records: time, feature, model, size and credits for each request | To bill credits, show you your usage and keep the service reliable |
| Your own AI key (if you add one): stored encrypted, never shown again in full | To run your team’s AI on your key |
| Support emails you send us | To help you |
We don’t collect analytics about how you use the app, and this website doesn’t use analytics or advertising cookies (see cookies).
Who helps us run Overcrank
We share information only with companies that help us provide the service, only as much as they need, and under contracts that limit what they can do with it:
- Payment processing: Stripe (billing, cards and invoices).
- AI providers: Google, Anthropic or OpenAI, depending on the model in use, receive the AI request described above. We use their paid business services, whose terms don’t let them train their models on that data. If your team adds its own AI key, requests run under your own agreement with that provider instead, so check its terms (some free tiers allow training).
- Messaging: an email delivery service for account emails and alerts, and Twilio for text alerts.
- Hosting: cloud providers that run our servers and store account data.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale (with this policy continuing to apply). We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
We keep account information while your account is open. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except billing records we’re legally required to keep (usually up to 7 years) and backups, which roll off within 90 days. AI usage records are kept for up to 2 years for billing and reliability.
Your choices and rights
- See, correct or download your information: most of it is in the app and portal. For anything else, email us.
- Delete your account: email privacy@overcrank.ai from the address on your account.
- Turn off alerts or remove a phone number in the app under Profile.
- Clear what’s stored on your Mac under Profile → App data.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California), you may have extra rights, such as objecting to certain uses or asking us to limit them. We’ll honor them, and you won’t be treated differently for using them. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Cookies
The website and account portal use only necessary cookies, such as the one that keeps you signed in, plus one that remembers your privacy choices. We don’t use analytics or advertising cookies today. If we add any, they’ll stay off until you turn them on.
Security
Connections are encrypted, passwords are stored scrambled, AI keys and secrets are encrypted at rest, and access to account data is limited to people who need it. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we’ll tell you as the law requires.
Children
Overcrank isn’t meant for children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
International transfers
We and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires it, we use safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
Changes
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we’ll update the date above and tell you in the app or by email before the change takes effect.
