What Overcrank is
Overcrank is a Mac app for people who shoot a lot of footage and need it copied safely, kept in sync, and filed where it belongs. It has four main tools, named after engine parts:
| Tool | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | Copies cards and drives with every file verified | Free |
| Cruise Control | Keeps a folder mirrored to another on a schedule | Free |
| Readout | Shows exactly what a media file is (codec, resolution, audio…) | Free |
| Crankshaft | Organizes folders from plain-English instructions, with preview and undo | Driver / Crew |
Plus Cranky, an assistant that remembers how you like things filed, and a Toolbox of reusable instruction sets and folder templates.
Install
- Download Overcrank for Mac. It’s a standard
.dmg; drag the app to Applications. - Open it. macOS may ask you to confirm the first launch (the app is notarized by Apple).
- That’s it. Everything Overcrank needs is built in, so there is nothing else to install.
Requirements: macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple Silicon or Intel.
The app updates itself. You’ll see a note when a new version is ready; it installs on the next launch.
Create an account and sign in
You can use Drivetrain, Cruise Control and Readout without signing in. To use the AI tools, notifications, or to share a library with a team, create an account:
- In the app, click Sign in, then Create account (or go to the account portal).
- Verify your email.
- Sign in from the app.
Every new account starts a 14-day trial of everything, including 100 AI credits, no card needed. When the trial ends you drop to Free and keep the transfer tools. See Account & billing.
Signed-in Macs. Each account can be signed in on a limited number of Macs (2 per team member). If you hit the limit, the app shows your signed-in Macs and lets you sign one out. See Devices.
