Drivetrain
Verified card and drive transfers with pause, resume, speed control and a searchable history.
- 1Drag the card into Source and a folder into Destination
- 2Pick a speed
- 3Leave MD5 verify on
- 4Start, watch it copy, wait for the green verify
What it’s for
Drivetrain copies footage from a card or drive to another location and proves every file arrived intact. Every file is checksummed after the copy. It never removes anything from the source.
Run a transfer
- Source: drag a card, folder or drive into the left zone, or click to pick one.
- Destination: drag or pick the folder to copy into. Turn on Keep folder name to create a folder with the source’s name inside the destination.
- Speed: pick one of four presets.
- Options: see below. The defaults are right for most offloads.
- Start. Progress shows files copied, data moved, current speed and ETA.
When the copy finishes, verification runs automatically and the transfer turns green. Red means something didn’t match; the log tells you which files.
Speeds
| Preset | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Steady | Warm or older spinning drives, long sessions, laptops on battery |
| Medium | Everyday offloads |
| Fast | SSDs and fast RAIDs |
| Cranked | NVMe and Thunderbolt, when you just need it done |
Drivetrain detects the interface (USB 2/3, Thunderbolt, NVMe…) and shows it next to each location so you know what you’re working with.
Options
| Option | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| MD5 verify | On | Checksums every file after the copy. Slower, but the only way to be sure |
| Verify sizes | – | Faster check: compares file sizes only. Use for quick re-copies |
| Preserve dates | On | Keeps original modification dates |
| Extended attrs | On | Keeps macOS tags, Finder comments and other metadata |
| Skip existing | – | Don’t overwrite files already at the destination |
| Update newer | – | Only copy files that are newer than the destination’s |
| Delta sync | – | Copy only the parts of files that changed (for repeat copies) |
| Skip empty folders | – | Leave out folders with nothing in them |
| Exclude junk | On | Skips .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and similar |
| Exclude cache | On | Skips cache folders some cameras and apps create |
| Exclude proxies | – | Skips proxy files when you only want originals |
Pause, resume, cancel
- Pause stops the copy cleanly; Resume picks up where it left off. Drives can cool down; nothing is lost.
- Cancel asks you to confirm. Files already copied stay at the destination.
- If a single file fails, you can skip it and continue.
History
Every transfer is logged: source, destination, files, data moved, time, speed, and whether it verified. Search the history to answer “did I copy card B on Tuesday?” months later. Totals (transfers, data moved, total time) are at the top of the page.
Notifications
With a Driver or Crew plan, Drivetrain can email or text you when a long transfer finishes or fails. Turn it on in Profile → Notifications; see Notifications.
Tips
- Copy one card at a time to a spinning drive; two at once is slower than one after another.
- Keep MD5 verify on for anything you’ll format the card after.
- For a second copy to an archive, use Cruise Control so it stays in sync by itself.
