Cranky
An assistant that remembers how you like things filed and finds clips by what they are.
- 1Ask in plain words
- 2Cranky answers or asks if unsure
- 3Say "remember that" and it does
What it’s for
Cranky is the conversational side of Overcrank. Ask it to find things, explain what’s in a folder, or do a multi-step tidy-up, and it remembers your preferences and corrections so it gets better the more you use it.
Talk to it
Open Cranky in the sidebar and type. Things it’s good at:
- “Where did the interview footage from last Tuesday end up?”
- “Set up a new project folder the way I usually do.”
- “I always want audio in its own folder — remember that.”
- “What’s taking up the most space on the shoot drive?”
If it isn’t sure what you mean, it asks before doing anything. Actions that change files show the same preview-and-apply flow as Crankshaft.
Memory
Cranky keeps a local memory on your Mac of:
- past conversations and what worked,
- your preferences (“audio in its own folder”),
- corrections you made,
- recipes: multi-step jobs it has done for you before.
This memory is stored on your Mac. You can see how much space it uses and clear it from Profile → App data.
To search by meaning, Cranky builds a small search index of your file and folder names on your Mac. If Overcrank improves how search works, Cranky rebuilds the index the next time it starts.
